Casino House Edge Explained
House edge is the casino's built-in advantage on a bet, expressed as a percentage of the stake. It is not one number for the whole casino but a specific figure for each game and each bet, and it tells you how much of every rupee wagered the casino expects to keep over a long run.
To understand your real costs, you need to combine the edge with how much you stake and how many rounds you play each hour. A low-edge game played fast with big stakes can cost more than a higher-edge game played slowly, so the edge is only half of the picture.

How the edge is calculated
The house edge comes from paying less than the true odds. On a European roulette wheel there are 37 pockets, so a bet on one number wins once in 37 spins on average, yet it pays only 35:1. Bet ₹100 on one number for 37 spins: you stake ₹3,700, win once and get back ₹3,600. The missing ₹100 is 2.70% of the total staked, and that is the house edge. The same method, averaging every possible outcome against its payout, gives the edge for any game.
Formally, expected loss equals house edge multiplied by total amount wagered. Here is how common games compare:

Blackjack edges vary with rule sets and player choices. The 0.5% figure applies only when the player follows basic strategy, the chart of correct decisions for each hand, and a table that pays 6:5 on a blackjack instead of 3:2 is considerably worse. Baccarat offers no strategic choices, but its two main bets carry low edges, while the tie bet is one of the most expensive on the casino floor. On roulette, the extra double-zero pocket nearly doubles the edge, which is why a single-zero wheel is always the cheaper table. Slots do not publish a house edge directly; they publish a return to player (RTP), and the edge is what is left. A slot with a 96% RTP has a 4% edge, and the same title can run at different RTP settings.
From edge to hourly cost
Staking and pace turn an edge into a burn rate. The working formula is: expected hourly loss = average stake per round × rounds per hour × house edge. The round counts below are only examples; real pace depends on the table, the dealer and the player.
- Blackjack: ₹500 a hand, 60 hands an hour, 0.5% edge. ₹30,000 wagered, expected loss ₹150.
- European roulette: ₹500 a spin, 40 spins an hour, 2.70% edge. ₹20,000 wagered, expected loss ₹540.
- Slots: ₹50 a spin, 500 spins an hour, 4% edge. ₹25,000 wagered, expected loss ₹1,000.
The slot in this example has the smallest stake per round but the highest hourly cost, because it combines a larger edge with a much faster pace. These are averages over many hours; in any single hour you may win or lose far more.
What the edge does not change
No betting system beats the house edge. Changing stake sizes after wins or losses, following patterns or waiting for a number to become "due" only changes how the results are spread out, not the percentage the casino keeps. The practical use of the house edge is comparison: it shows which games and bets cost least for the same amount wagered, and the hourly formula shows how quickly that cost adds up.
