Rows and Risk Levels

A board with n rows of pegs has n + 1 slots at the bottom. An 8-row board has 9 slots, a 12-row board has 13 and a 16-row board has 17. More rows mean more possible paths and a wider spread of results, so the outer slots become even harder to reach.

Most versions also let you pick a risk setting, usually low, medium or high. The setting does not change how the ball falls; it changes the multipliers printed on the slots. On low risk, the values are close together: the centre slots pay a little under the stake and the edges pay a modest multiple. On high risk, the centre slots pay very little and the edge slots pay much larger multiples. The exact tables differ from game to game, so check the table of the specific game you are looking at.

Why the Edges Pay Most but Hit Rarely

The landing slot follows a binomial distribution. With n rows, the number of paths leading to a slot is the binomial coefficient, and there is only one path to each of the two edge slots: left at every peg, or right at every peg. The chance of reaching one particular edge is therefore (1/2) to the power n.

The centre slots, by contrast, have the largest number of paths. On a 12-row board, the single middle slot is reached by 924 of the 4,096 paths, about 23% of drops. This is why the game puts its biggest multipliers at the edges: they are paid out rarely, and the payout table as a whole is set so that the game returns less than the total staked over time.

Provably Fair Seeds and the Law in India

Plinko games in this category usually use a provably fair system. Before play, the game publishes a hash of a secret server seed. Your client seed and a counter called a nonce are combined with the server seed to decide the path of each ball. After the seed is revealed, you can recompute the path and confirm that the result was fixed in advance and not changed. The check works only after the round: it can confirm that a result was fair, but it cannot predict the next drop.

In India, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits offering, aiding, advertising and processing payments for online money games, including online casino games such as Plinko, whether based on skill, chance or both. Offering or facilitating such games can bring up to 3 years in prison and/or a fine of up to ₹1 crore, and advertising up to 2 years and/or ₹50 lakh, with higher penalties for repeat offences. Banks and payment systems may not process these payments. The Act targets providers, advertisers and payment channels rather than treating players as offenders, and its Rules were notified in 2026 and are in force.
