Martingale Strategy Explained
The Martingale betting system doubles the stake after each loss and goes back to the starting stake after a win. The idea is that the first win recovers all prior losses plus a profit equal to the original stake. It is most commonly used on even-money roulette bets such as red/black, odd/even or high/low, which pay 1 to 1.
It does not work in the long run. Martingale changes the size of your bets, not the odds of the wheel, and no betting system beats the house edge. What it does is swap many small wins for a rare but very large loss.

How the System Works
- Start with a base bet, for example ₹100 on red.
- After a loss, double the previous bet: ₹200, then ₹400, then ₹800.
- After a win, go back to ₹100.
Suppose you lose ₹100, ₹200 and ₹400, then win with an ₹800 bet. You have lost ₹700 and won ₹800, so you are ₹100 up, exactly the base stake. This is why the system looks convincing: most short sessions end with a small profit, and every losing run seems to be fixed by the next win.
How Fast a Losing Streak Grows
Stakes grow exponentially, not gradually. Starting from ₹100, after 10 straight losses the next stake is ₹1,02,400, and you have already lost ₹1,02,300. If that bet wins, the net profit is still only ₹100.
Long streaks are rarer than short ones, but they are not rare enough. On a European wheel, an even-money bet wins 18 times in 37 (48.65%) and loses 19 times in 37 (about 51.4%), because the single zero counts against it. Ten losses in a row happen in about 1 in 790 sequences. A player who runs many Martingale sequences will meet such a streak sooner or later, and a single such streak, if the player has to stop there, costs as much as about a thousand ₹100 wins. Two practical limits end the progression before the maths can "catch up":
- Table limits. Every table has a maximum bet. If the maximum were ₹10,000, a player starting at ₹100 could not place the ₹12,800 bet needed after seven losses, and the losses would be locked in.
- Finite bankroll. Nobody has unlimited money. The deeper the streak, the sooner the next doubled stake is simply more than you have left.
Why No Progression Beats the House Edge
The core flaw is that Martingale cannot change the probability or the payout of any spin. Each spin is independent, the zero pocket stays on the wheel, and the house edge on a European even-money bet is 2.70% of every rupee staked, whatever the order or size of the bets. Doubling only puts more money on the table during a losing run, and the expected loss grows with the total amount wagered.
Two related systems are often mentioned. The reverse Martingale doubles the stake after each win and resets after a loss, hoping to ride a winning streak. The d'Alembert raises the stake by one unit after a loss and lowers it by one unit after a win, so it grows much more slowly than Martingale and the swings are smaller. Neither changes the odds: each still faces the same house edge on every bet.
In short, Martingale produces frequent small wins and occasional very large losses, and over time the house edge wins. If you play roulette at all, treat the stake as the cost of entertainment, set a limit in advance and stop when it is reached.
