Megaways Slots Explained

Updated Pro-Casinos editorial desk3 min read

Megaways is a reel mechanic developed by Big Time Gaming and licensed to other studios. Instead of a fixed grid, each reel shows a different number of symbols on every spin, and the number of ways to win is recalculated each time. In the classic six-reel layout it can reach 117,649.

A winning combination is made by landing matching symbols on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel. There are no fixed paylines: any matching symbol on reel one can connect with any matching symbol on reel two, and so on to the right. That is why Megaways games look busy and why the number shown above the reels changes after every spin.

How the ways to win are counted

The number of ways to win is the product of the symbols visible on each reel. In a standard six-reel layout, each reel shows between 2 and 7 symbols. The minimum is therefore 64 ways (2×2×2×2×2×2), while the maximum is 117,649 (7×7×7×7×7×7).

Most spins land somewhere in between. If the six reels show 3, 5, 7, 4, 6 and 2 symbols, the spin has 3×5×7×4×6×2 = 5,040 ways. Some games add a horizontal reel above the middle reels that adds extra symbols to them, which changes the count, and the game's rules screen explains exactly how.

More ways does not mean more money. A symbol still has to appear on at least three adjacent reels from the left, symbol values are set low enough to account for the many ways, and the game's return to player (RTP) already averages across every possible reel layout. A ₹10 stake covers all the ways on that spin; you do not pay extra for a bigger grid.

Cascades and volatility

Many Megaways games, though not all, use cascading or tumbling reels. Winning symbols leave the reels, and new ones tumble into place. These cascades can create several winning combinations from a single spin, and the chain continues until no new win forms. In some games each cascade also raises a win multiplier, usually during free spins.

Megaways titles are generally built as high-volatility games. The large number of ways, the cascades and the multipliers concentrate much of the game's return in rare, large wins, while ordinary spins often pay little or nothing. For players, the big wins and long losing streaks that come with high-volatility games mean setting a realistic budget before playing. With a ₹1,000 bankroll at ₹10 a spin, a run of 100 spins with only small returns is entirely normal. No staking pattern or timing changes this, because no system beats the house edge built into the game.

Reading a Megaways paytable

When evaluating a single Megaways slot, the paytable and help screen explain how the payouts work. They list the symbol values for three, four, five and six of a kind, the scatter symbol and how many trigger free spins, any multipliers, and the maximum win, which is often capped as a multiple of the stake. The help screen also states the game's RTP, and the same title can be offered at different RTP settings, so it is worth checking there rather than assuming.

The Megaways mechanic provides the foundation for this type of variable "ways to win" gameplay, but each slot's paytable gives the specific details on payout values, trigger conditions and win limits. That is worth remembering when moving between Megaways titles: Megaways is the reel structure, while the paytable and RTP decide how often and how much a particular game pays.
