Mines Game Explained

Updated Pro-Casinos editorial desk3 min read

Mines is an instant game played on a 5x5 grid of 25 tiles. Before the round, the player picks a stake and chooses how many mines to hide, from 1 to 24, so the number of safe tiles ranges from 24 down to 1. Each safe tile revealed raises the payout multiplier; revealing a mine ends the round and the stake is lost. The player can cash out at any point between clicks.

The best-known version is made by Spribe and has an RTP of 97%, meaning that over a very long run it pays back about 97% of the money staked. The mine positions are fixed before the first click, and no app or pattern can reveal them in advance. Mines is a game of pure chance with a built-in house edge, not a puzzle that can be solved.

How a Round Works

A round follows the same steps every time:

  • Choose a stake.
  • Select the number of mines, from 1 to 24.
  • Reveal tiles one by one. Each safe tile increases the multiplier.
  • Decide after each safe tile whether to cash out at the current multiplier or continue and risk hitting a mine.

This rising multiplier against the growing risk of a mine is what builds the game's suspense. The only real decision is where to stop, and that decision changes how much risk you take, not the house edge.

The Probability Behind the Multiplier

The odds are simple counting. With m mines, the first tile is safe with probability (25 − m)/25. With 1 mine that is 96%, with 3 mines 88% and with 5 mines 80%. With 20 mines, only 5 tiles are safe, so the first click is safe just 20% of the time and loses 80% of the time.

After each safe tile, one safe tile fewer remains, so the risk rises with every click. With 5 mines, the chance of surviving three clicks is 20/25 × 19/24 × 18/23, or about 49.6%. A fair multiplier would be the inverse of that probability, about x2.02; a game with 97% RTP pays roughly 97% of the fair figure, about x1.96. In the same way, one safe tile with 5 mines works out to about x1.21 and two to about x1.53. Every step up the multiplier ladder is priced so that the house keeps its 3% on average, whenever you cash out.

Provably Fair, Hack Apps and the Law

Mines uses a provably fair system. Before the round, the game commits to the mine layout with a hashed server seed, and the player's client seed is combined with it. After the round, the server seed is revealed, and the player can recompute the layout to confirm the mines were placed before the first click and did not move. This check works only after the round: it proves fairness, but it cannot predict the next result.

That is why apps promoted as Mines "hacks" or "predictors" are a red flag. The layout is hidden behind a cryptographic hash until the round is over, so there is no visual pattern to read and no signal to detect. Such apps often exist to collect money, personal data or account details from people who hope for a shortcut.

In India, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits offering, aiding, advertising and processing payments for online money games, which covers online casino games such as Mines, whether based on skill, chance or both. Offering or facilitating such games can bring up to 3 years in prison and/or a fine of up to ₹1 crore, and advertising up to 2 years and/or ₹50 lakh, with higher penalties for repeat offences. Banks and payment systems may not process these payments. The Act targets providers, advertisers and payment channels rather than treating players as offenders, and its Rules were notified in 2026 and are in force.
