How UPI Supercharges Deposits at Indian Online Casinos
18 October 2026
UPI's instantaneous payments have become the go-to method for funding online casino accounts in India. This April alone, the platform processed 500 million transactions for real-money gaming, according to a 2025 industry report. And with just a phone number, UPI can push that money into a casino wallet in a matter of seconds.
UPI's rise reflects the platform's immense scale and speed in the world's most populous nation. The digital payments system, launched by India's NPCI in 2016, is now used by all 530 banks in the country. Now, more than 698 million transactions are handled each day, according to data from NPCI that was compiled and released by Meetanshi in January 2026.
But it's UPI's combination of instant bank-to-bank transfers, 24/7 availability, and negligible cost to the user that has operators and players alike shifting from traditional bank cards. According to one industry insider, UPI now carries over 90% of real-money gaming deposits in India.
"This is a true game-changer for online gaming in India," says Rahul Gupta, the founder of CasinoAdda, an online poker platform. "The seamless, near-instant funds transfer that UPI offers has significantly improved deposit speeds and reduced operational challenges for gaming operators."
Gaming is one of the fastest-growing segments in India, with the GR8 Tech 2025 report on India flagging the potential with 1.4 billion people, 950 million internet users, and 448 million with an interest in gaming. UPI's high approval rates and low cost make it a perfect fit for this $44 billion domestic market.
"UPI transactions maintain high success rates, typically exceeding 95-98% across different portals, in contrast to international card payment approvals which hover between 85-92% based on various factors," a Todapay industry briefing noted last year. "High success rates mean far fewer rejected payments and an improved user experience, while the instant transfer nature ensures speedy deposits."
For an Indian online casino player, using UPI is as simple as opening the platform's app, selecting UPI as a deposit method, and entering their UPI ID or simply their phone number. The platform sends a notification to which the player verifies the transaction amount. Once approved, the funds show up in the casino account, usually in seconds.
"The simplicity of completing a transaction using UPI without the hassle of entering card details and a CVV code was surprising at first," says Raj, a user of UPI for gaming. "Plus, UPI is so widely accepted now, even for gaming; it's an option in pretty much any online casino app I've come across."
Casinos are also prizing the switch away from traditional card payments, not least for the enhanced conversion it delivers. "After adopting UPI, we saw a 35% increase in first-time user deposits, as compared to stakeholders with traditional banks or card processors," adds Gupta.
Industry players are citing increasingly compelling numbers to support the move to UPI. According to payment provider Hashlytics, 80% of surveyed consumers already use UPI for online transactions, and 70% earmark gaming for wallets larger than Rs 1,000. The GR8 Tech report, meanwhile, reported Aviator games commanded 21% of a major player's Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR).
The payment industry itself may now find itself increasingly tied to the fortunes of gaming operators in India. A report from Storyboard18 notes that "entire transaction volumes have been riding on the back of real money gaming. In fact, over 90% of the entire RMG wallet transactions are routed through UPI." That soon to be 500 million monthly UPI transactions could be exposure for payment providers to regulatory and pricing pressures in what remains a lightly supervised market.
Some of that pressure materialized in 2026 when the Indian government allowed UPI operators to enable fees on large transactions. By late September, merchant fees of 0.05% will apply to all transactions over Rs 2,000, according to Reuters. That could add cost to the smooth UPI ride, especially for frequent large depositors at casinos.
But such friction points aside, UPI's combination of convenience, speed, and trust with 450 million users is sequentially altering how the Indian gaming market moves money.
